The idea of Social Distancing, is that we need to be maintaining a safe distance from one another so that the virus does not spread.
For the majority of us, we live a life in which we are physically present around one another, though being social does not necessarily require physical presence. This is just requiring a shift in perspective to know that we can still be social while maintaining a distance.
The way that we are now being asked to engage socially means that we will have to be very mindful of our decisions about continuing to engage with others. It will just be through different means.
Fortunately, we do live in a time where technology can enable a lot of social interaction, whether through video calls, good old-fashion telephone, social media, or email. There are options for us to continue to engage and be mindful of the very real possibility that we could get sucked into new habits of not making an effort. It’s going to take intention and mindfulness from us to reach out, which is something that we might not have done otherwise. So I do think there will be many silver linings that can come out of this situation. We might not be sure to see them at the moment, because we are being more intentional about our need to engage socially.
